Extract vs. Powder: What’s the Difference?

The primary difference between mushroom extracts and powders lies in the concentration of active compounds—especially polysaccharides.

Our mushroom powders are produced by gently grinding the fruiting bodies, preserving important nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, and fiber. However, their polysaccharide content is relatively low, typically between 1% and 3%.

In contrast, our mushroom extracts are made using a hot water extraction method starting from coarsely ground powder. This process significantly increases the concentration of bioavailable polysaccharides and beta-glucans, though it reduces the levels of fiber and certain vitamins.

For dietary supplement applications, offering both forms—powder and extract—can provide customers with a more comprehensive range of benefits.

If you plan to use medicinal mushrooms in food or beverage formulations, other considerations such as solubility, taste, and processing compatibility may influence which format is more suitable.

How can you use functional mushrooms?

Functional mushrooms are very versatile and can be used in many different ways. This is also reflected in our customer base.

Our customers are manufacturers of dietary supplements, foods and beverages, cosmetics, pet food and sports supplements. All of them are using our products in different ways as a part of their product range.

We’ve collected some examples of how to use medicinal mushrooms, when it’s better to use extract or powder and when it’s better to use a specific mushroom.
